Madewell Spring Arrivals

Late last week, I woke up, went out to the patio, and saw that the big tree in our backyard was in full bloom. While I know the majority of the country is freezing cold right now, we've been having fantastic spring-like weather, which makes the release of so many store's spring items right now extra-perfect. I've quickly figured out that the typical "winter" items aren't really needed in Newport Beach, and fall/spring clothes are ideal for my new hometown. With all of that in mind, I'm particularly excited about Madewell's new spring items that were just released this week! I've said it before, but I feel like when I walk into Madewell, I want nearly every item in the entire store, and that's unusual for me. This spring's offerings are no exception. Click through the look above to check out my favorite items!

R.Brutz Woodcraft

I'm constantly on the search for the best of the best products to share on the blog, and I'm currently swooning over the classic-but-cool handcrafted wood boards from R.Brutz Woodcraft. While I appreciate any sort of handcrafted product, these are extra-special, because the man behind the boards is a good friend of ours from our time in Charlottesville! Robert just started making these gorgeous pieces last week, and has already launched a website and started sales, so hurry on over and check out his site. I'm having a hard time picking favorites...but I think it's between the cheese board (the triangular one)  and the bread board for my fav of the moment.

Side note: these photos (shot by Robert's wife Cali, the brains behind (once like a spark) photography) are making me want some cheese and crusty bread, and it's not even lunch.

Best of: The 2014 Grammy Awards

Taylor Swift in Gucci
Chrissy Teigen and husband John Legend

Ciara in Pucci

Ahh, the Grammy Awards. Year after year, it seems like musically-talented celebs use Grammy night as an opportunity to out-weird each other. We've seen Britney and Justin in denim...outfits, J.Lo in practically nothing, and Lady Gaga in an egg situation that still confuses me. Honestly, for me, the Grammy red carpets aren't usually my favorite, mostly because I just love a pretty, well-styled dress, and that's not what the Grammy Awards are about.

All that said, these three ladies eschewed the typical Grammy "creativity" thing, and for that, I love them. Taylor, Chrissy, and Ciara, you win my adoration, love, and the three places on my best-dressed list!

Oxygenating Cream moisturizes, protects and softens: this universal cream meets, in a single product, the essential needs of hydration for all skin types. Its special composition based on high-quality plant extracts and organic vegetable oils, such as Rosehip oil and Sweet Almond oil, helps ideally balance the skin’s hydrolipidic film. Rapidly absorbed after application, it provides a makeup base for prolonged wear.
My thoughts: When I applied the lotion, my first thought was that it seemed way too thick and heavy to be a facial cream. After checking the Glossybox site and seeing that it was supposed to absorb rapidly, I went ahead and slathered it on. I was shocked a few minutes later when I was left with residue-free, but very soft, skin. The downside to this cream, in my opinion, is the lack of sunscreen in it, so I have just been using it at night.

PUNKER eyeliner is easier to use than traditional liquid liners and offers endless possibilities of application. Its oversized felt tip applicator tapers to a precise point for maximum versatility. The short and thick “maker pen” design allows for optimum control during application. The high performance formula glides on smooth and quick-dries to a long lasting finish.
My thoughts: I was super excited to try this one out, since I'm still not a pro at applying liquid liner. While the felt tip of the liner reminded me of a sharpie pen and made application a breeze, I had an allergic reaction to the liner about fifteen minutes post-application. I was really bummed about the reaction, because the liner made it easy to create the perfect cat-eye.

Nails inc nail polishes are professionally formulated for a long lasting, ultra glossy finish. Victoria is a top selling shade that will go with any outfit, day or night.
My thoughts: I'm a fan of dark, vampy nails throughout the winter months, and this shade is the perfect deep burgundy.

This vitalizing body cleanser makes every shower a flower-power experience. The natural healing properties of rose and jasmine leave you feeling as fresh and fragrant as a flower.
My thoughts: A great body wash with a light, floral scent. I loved the bright colors of the packaging, and the fact that the sample was super-sized!

This mask smells so much like fresh pumpkin you will think it's Thanksgiving. And exfoliant lovers will give Thanks! That tingle is the pumpkin enzyme combining with glycolic acid to go to town on your skin’s flaws dissolving impurities like dead skin and clogged pores. Adds brightness and radiance to the skin and significantly improves the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles after a single use. If you thought that masks were only for mature skin types…think again! The key to clearer skin is to unclog pores, reduce bacteria and nourish, tone and heal on and below the skin’s surface. Today’s masks from MICHAEL TODD true organics do all that transforming dull, lackluster skin into clearer irresistible complexions.
My thoughts: This mask certainly lived up to its name, and the pumpkin scent was pretty strong! Once I got past the initial scent, the mask really did brighten my skin and clear my pores, which was worth smelling like pumpkin pie for a few minutes.

What I Wore: Striped Dress

dress: madewell (sold out, but similar in solid black) | belt: chico's | shoes: michael kors (similar
tights: express | jacket: sanctuary (similar)

I stumbled upon these photos this morning when I was uploading, and realized I hadn't shared them! I wore my trusty Madewell striped dress, styled up for cooler weather, to breakfast with my friend Meggie a couple weeks back when I was in Scottsdale for Christmas! I'm pretty sure this dress wins as most-worn item in my closet, I can't stop wearing it!

Perfect Pillows

1st: 1/2/3 /// 2nd: 1/2 /// 3rd: 1/2/3 /// 4th: 1/2/3

I've been on the hunt for the perfect throw pillows since we moved in to our new place, and if you haven't gathered by looking at the above options, I've kind of developed an unofficial color scheme. Lately, I've been really into white, gray, gold, black, and tan, which I find both peaceful and very classic, and it keeps things from being overly girly. After all, my guy lives here, too, and so I try to keep the pink contained to my wardrobe! I wound up going with this one and this one, and I love them both. I may add a third, but I'm having a hard time picking a third one from the options above- too many good ones to choose from!

Best of: Small Closet Organization

Today's topic is a bit of a bore, but so necessary for everyone: how to make the most out of a teeny-tiny closet. I'll start this by saying that I love our apartment, it gets great natural light, we have a backyard, great neighbors, and all of that kind of stuff. What I don't love? Our (shared) clothes closet is super small. I've been spoiled in the past by large walk-in closets, so this has been a bit of an adjustment for me! I thought I'd share a few of the products that have saved my sanity over the past few months.

First up, the best thing you can do when you're faced with a too-small closet: edit your wardrobe. Seriously, go through your closet, and donate anything you no longer wear. I realize this is easier said than done, though. Next, make sure you're utilizing your dresser in the best way possible, and under-bed storage is always an option for out-of-season clothes.

I previously used, and loved, hanging shoe racks like this one. Since hanging space is at a premium, I switched to using this standing rack, which sits in the corner of our room. While I wasn't crazy about having my shoes on a rack outside the closet for aesthetic reasons, it's hardly noticeable when the door to our room is open, and much more functional with our current setup.

Since I'm not using the floor of our closet for a floor shoe rack, I have room to squeeze in our laundry baskets, as well as a set of plastic drawers that we keep scarves, gloves, hats, and all of Brett's ties in, which has worked out extremely well for us, and the shallow drawers make it easy to find whatever we're looking for.

These stacking jewelry trays don't actually go in my closet, but help keep all of my jewelry perfectly organized in my dresser drawer. Since purchasing these, I've found myself wearing so much more jewelry, because I can actually see it! Imagine that.

In addition to the jewelry trays, this hanging jewelry storage takes up so little space in the closet, and is perfect for corralling my bigger pieces of jewelry, like cuff bracelets, as well as a sewing kit, and other little "closet essentials."

The top clear drawer dividers divide up my makeup collection into more manageable pieces: one for daily makeup, one for brushes, and one for "extra" makeup that I don't wear daily (like red lipstick and  dark eyeshadow), which seems to be a great system for me, and makes it easier for me to take all of my makeup into the bedroom if I want to do my makeup in there, instead of the bathroom!

Phew! If you made it this far, you get a medal!

What are your favorite closet organization tips?

Usually after a major red-carpet event, I have a hard time picking the best of the best to share here, because there's often an overabundance of great looks. This year…not so much. Since this blog is about the BEST, and not the worst, I'm choosing to ignore all the crazy WTF-ery and instead focus on these five gorgeous looks from last night!

Printstagram Instagram-a-Day Calendar

instagram calendar
Since it's the first full week of the new year, it seems appropriate to discuss calendars, right? While calendars seem to be on the decline with the rise of smartphones, paper calendars can be a bit more of a novelty, and less of a focus on function.

This calendar is from Printstagram, a site that prints your Instagrams, and my first order from their site was one of their calendars, as a gift for Brett. If you didn't know, Bogey (our pup!) has his own Instagram account, @bestofbogey, and each day of the calendar is a different photo from Bogey's Instagram account. Brett and I are more than a little obsessed with Mr. Bogey. I gave Brett this calendar as one of his birthday gifts, and it's safe to say it was one of the most well-recieved gifts I've given him.

The best part about ordering the calendars, though? I ordered Brett's in November, and the calendar started with December 1st, and ends in November of 2014. So even if you put off buying a new calendar, you can have a year's worth of photos to tear off!

Steven Alan Stripe at West Elm

Well, it must be designer collab season! The collaboration I'm highlighting today is Steven Alan's Stripe collection for one of my favorite home stores, West Elm. I've long admired Steven Alan's aesthetic, and the collection for West Elm really evokes that same look. I think my very favorite would be the coral stripe, because let's be real: I can't resist striped anything

Sugar Paper for J.Crew

I've heard of people calling the period between Thanksgiving and Valentine's Day "engagement season," and judging by my Facebook feed, it seems like a couple friends are getting engaged each week! Although my bridal days are behind me, I wish that this adorable Sugar Paper for J.Crew stationery collection had been around while I was planning our wedding! From "will you be my bridesmaid?" to "thank you," this collab has any newly engaged girl covered. Shop the full collection here.

What I Wore: Christmas Eve

dress: madewell | shoes: kate spade

Happy New Year! I hope you had a fantastic holiday season filled with lots of fun and family- I know mine certainly was! I'm excited to be back to my routine, and I'm ready to kick off the new year. I have lots of fun things planned for the blog in the coming months, so I hope you'll stay tuned! Above are a couple of photos from Christmas Eve- I wore this Madewell dress (now on sale!) that has been on repeat since the day I purchased it, and paired it with one of my all-time favorite pairs of Kate Spade shoes
