Pure Barre Review

Over the summer, back when we were still in Charlottesville, I decided I wanted to give Pure Barre a try, since most of my friends and Brett were studying for the bar or out of town. I was a little (okay, a lot) nervous to give it a try, because I'm pretty much the least coordinated person around, and I wasn't in great shape, to be honest. I've mentioned it before on the blog, but I had back surgery a few years ago, and had some complications that resulted in some chronic pain that still gives me trouble from time to time.

Because of my back problems, I've had a hard time finding a workout that worked for my back and that I also really enjoyed...until I tried Pure Barre. Consider me obsessed. Seriously, it's an amazing workout, and after the first class, I could barely lift my arms up, even though we never lifted weights more than two pounds. It's  a series of isometric (read: tiny) movements on the floor and at a ballet barre combined with stretching, to build and lengthen muscle.

Pure Barre isn't just for people that have back problems, either. Every class, there were students ranging in age from 18-60+, and a variety of fitness levels, and every single person in the class was sweating by the end of each class. The instructors were SO encouraging, and amazing at correcting form, which makes the exercises harder and safer for your body at the same time. I went regularly for the two months before we moved, and I could really, truly, tell a difference in both how my body looked and felt- having a stronger core has really made a difference in my back pain, which was a huge motivator for me to continue going back each day, even when I was sore!

Pure Barre is definitely one of the things I miss most about Charlottesville, which sounds crazy, but it really was that awesome. I'm taking classes at another barre studio while we're in Scottsdale for the next month, and it's just not quite the same. I'm super excited that there is a Pure Barre studio in Newport Beach, and hope it's every bit as fantastic as Pure Barre Charlottesville!
