The Six Shoes You REALLY Need

While I love a closet full of shoes as much as the next girl, I find myself reaching for the same shoes, the workhorses of my closet, time and time again. If you're shopping on a budget, it helps to make a list of the holes in your closet, and fill them in.  Or, if you're finding that you never have the right shoe to work with an outfit, chances are, you're missing one of these six essentials. I highly recommend filling these six places in your closet, with shoes you love, and that fit your budget, then move out from there and purchase trendier, or even just plain FUN shoes from here! Make no mistake though, these six can be far from boring, if you pick the right pairs.

1. While it may be Spring now, you'll definitely  need a great pair of flat boots come Fall again (not to mention, if you buy these shoes now, you'll be able to score them on sale!). If your closet revolves mostly around earth tones, pick a brown pair, and if you're an all black, all the time girl, then go for the obvious choice! They will pull together every outfit, and since they're flat, you can walk anywhere in them. (Above: Frye Melissa Boots, $325)
2. The perfect ballet flat is an essential. You can wear these all year, and with pretty much anything. While I think basic black is great, if you go with a metallic, you can wear them with bare legs (and they'll make them look much longer than black flats), and not worry about them not matching your outfit, since they match everything! (Above: Gap City Flats $32)
3. The perfect pump is an essential to any wardrobe. You can wear these with tights in winter, and without the rest of the year. If you usually wear bare legs, pick nude, and if you usually wear pants or tights with pumps, pick black or navy (and if you want to cover your bases, buy both).  (Above: Corso Como $139).
4. In the summer, you need a pair of flat sandals you can walk around in, especially on vacation! Pick a comfy, but still cute pair, in a neutral color that goes with your wardrobe. (Above: Cole Haan, $158)
5. I like to call number 5 the party shoe. A complete "free pick" if you will, these are the shoes you put on when your LBD needs a little sprucing, or even with jeans and a cute top for a date night. Whether your party shoe is strappy, glittery, or an eye-popping hue, you need this shoe in your closet. (Above: Badgely Mischka $159)
6. Last, but certainly not least, is the summer wedge. Whether an espadrille, stacked wood, or cork sole, you need a pair to take you from Memorial Day to Labor Day. If you wear a lot of brights, go for a neutral, and vice versa. (Above: Seychelles, $110)

I know this list could change slightly, depending on your lifestyle, but I think that this is a great start to any girl's shoe wardrobe!

  2. Agreed, you've definitely hit the essentials.

My all time faves are booties aka. ankle boots, peeped toe booties, or regular. I find that they are super versatile. Wear them casually or add some edge to a more elegant ensemble.

  5. I have been toying with doing the same exact post, and yours is brilliant. I definitely think flat boots are essential... and frye are the best, sigh, because they're so expensive. Love the Melissa style!

  6. Love this post. Just found it through this week's Link a la mode and it caught my attention as I just submitted something similar. If you're ever coming out to the West Coast, here's 5 items you'll need for your wardrobe: http://stylesizzle.com/how-to-wear-fashion-style-tips/5-wardrobe-essentials-desert-living

P.S. As ghetto as it sounds, the only thing I'd add if you're not in NY is some flip flops. Even though I hate them they're a necessary evil in AZ!

  7. Style Sizzle- that's so funny, I just moved here from AZ.. I know most people NEED flip flops in their life, but I find flat sandals way more comfy, for me, personally (but I do have flip flops for the beach, of course!)

  8. This is a great basic list. The nice thing about having these shoes as a starting point is that you can get fun variations on them (jeweled or embellished flats instead of plain ones, boots with different details) when you want to switch things up but still want shoes that you know you'll wear!

  9. i definitely agree with you on all six. normally, i wear flats and sandals all year regardless of the season because it doesn't get that cold down here. but last fall/winter, i made my first boot purchase and felt like my whole life i had missed out on a secret chic boot society and was now apart of it! they really do make an outfit and fit so easily into any lifestyle.

  11. that's so true. i actually own a couple pairs of the gap city flats. they really are amazing, plus they have that little bag that you can keep them in just in case you want to switch.

  14. Loved the post! I like the idea of a party shoe. I think I like it best since I have pretty much one of each shoe and that's about it. :)

  15. I adore my sequined silver ballet flats. Too much, I think. They are wearing thin and I've lost a fair few sequins. The store I bought them in four years ago has since closed and I can't find replacements! I did score an admittedly cute pair of black sequined flats at a discount shoe store near my school, but they aren't the same.

I am not a wedge fan. Just never have been.

I think I own too many number 5s. They are definitely the most fun type of shoe.

  16. I have boots almost identical to those and wear them all the time in winter. Great pink color on the heels.

  17. Hi! I'm a new follower (IFB)

This is so helpful! I have over 40 pairs of shoes in my closet, but all I ever really wear are my Banana Republic rain boots and a pair of no-name flip flops. The rest are far too flashy for everyday life, but yet they are the majority of what I own.

I've realized lately that I really need to invest in some classic staples, but I didn't know where to start. I'll definitely have to keep this list with me next time I go shopping!!

  22. Flats are always a must, especially cute little ballet flats, but I can't stand the kind that scrunch up in the back. I call them "ankle bleeders."

Give me a pair of palin ol' maryjanes and I'm happy!
